I picked up the Player Character book, on a sale, and although I love systems with minutiae - I'm an avid fan of Rolemaster - but, I found the character generation/creation process just. Bewildering and overdone. Although the attitude of the game is great and certainly fun - is it really necessary for an hour-long character creation process on just the mechanics?

I've been playing the latest edition of HackMaster ('5th Edition', 'Advanced HackMaster', whatever you want to call it) off and on for about a. The simple, intuitive, and fast-paced Count Up system for combat is phenomenal, character creation focuses less on optimization and more on what you actually do. HackMaster Quick-Start Rules v 1.2. If you don't like using the pregenerated characters in Basic, this document will aid you in quickly generating a HackMaster character so you get get to the good stuff (killin' monsters) right away. Hackmaster 5th edition without the commentary (self.Hackmaster). Hackmaster did that at 2nd edition, and then evolved one more step with the new version becoming something keeping the hardcore feel of a 1st or 2nd edition D&D while evolving into something more modern. With the HM PHB it knows that people aren't going to gronk all it's rules.

Most of what seems fiddly is charts for height, weight, parents and siblings and such but those actually go pretty quickly. The part that can take some time is deciding what to spend your Build Points on for skills, proficiencies, and such but that isn't much different than any other game with extensive skills, feats, and proficiencies. Once you do it a couple times it really goes fairly quickly, certainly quicker IMO than Rolemaster, HERO, or GURPS. But as with anything, your mileage may vary.
