13.First Step Poker (William T. I haven't read all of them, so I'll give my impressions on what I do know: Ace on the River (Barry Greenstein) It's an entertaining read, but there isn't a lot of strategic value there.

I enjoyed hearing the stories of Barry moving up and the trials and tribulations, but it's an autobiography, not really a poker strategy book. Caro's Book of Poker Tells (Mike Caro) Very basic stuff, things that everyone knows these days. Maybe this was a big deal 20 years ago, but now it's pretty basic stuff. Assigning dollar values to identifying certain tells is completely ludicrous. Doyle Brunson's Super System, parts 1 (Doyle Brunson) Good for its time, but a lot of the specific advice is outdated. It's a good book if you're studying poker history, but your time is better served reading more useful things. No Limit Hold 'em Theory and Practice (David Sklansky, Ed Miller) It's a reasonable read.

It was a weird book - Sklansky had a notebook, and at the top of each page was written an idea. Then Ed Miller wrote the book based on Sklansky's ideas.

So it's really an Ed Miller book, and I think he's a fine writer. Phil Gordon's Little Green Book (Phil Gordon) I did not get much out of this book.

I don't play a lot of touranaments, but none of the tourney grinders I know recommended it. Play Poker Like the Pros (Phil Hellmuth) Avoid. This is the classic 'bad poker book filled with bad advice.' This will actively make your game worse. Small Stakes Hold'em (Ed Miller, David Sklansky, Mason Mallmuth) This is for limit games, not no-limit games. When I started playing live limit games (8/16, 20/40), this book was a big help, but who plays limit anymore? The Theory of Poker (David Sklansky) It hasn't aged all that well, but if you hadn't played a lot of poker, this is still a good starting point.

It's unfortunate that his Fundamental Theorem of Poker isn't completely correct. Granted, you have the seventh edition and maybe that's revised - my dogeared copy is from a long time ago. Still, the math and fundamentals are pretty important.

Good books I think you left off: Mathematics of Poker (Bill Chen, Jerrod Ankenman) It's super dense, but is probably the best book to read. Granted, I haven't internalized everything - it's like a college-level textbook and my first readthrough was probably not with the attention I should have given it. I'm re-reading it now.

Reading Poker Tells (Zachary Elwood) Verbal Poker Tells (Zachary Elwood) Much better than Caro's book if you want to focus on live tells. And unlike Caro, Elwood doesn't claim that this is going to be The Thing That Makes You All The Money. It adds a nice 5-10% (at most) to your winrate, but even he says stress the fundamentals. (Disclaimer: I know Zach, so take my endorsement for what it's worth.

Though I didn't meet him until after his first book was written, and I still really got a lot out of it. Also, buy his books, don't torrent them!) =-) Professional No-Limit Hold 'em Volume I (Sunny Mehta, Ed Miller, Matt Flynn) The only book I've seen that talks extensively about stack-to-pot ratio, plus it elaborates on the concept of planning your hand better than any other book I've read. SPR is a really useful tool. The Mental Game of Poker (Jared Tendler) THIS BOOK IS GREAT. It's the single most important poker book I've read. Mental game is so underemphasized and it's so, so important. I've read this book countless times and it's helped my game a ton.

It doesn't how well you play strategically if you're going to tilt off all your money. Easy Game series (Andrew Seidman) Probably the best books out there with regard to specific game strategy. They are pricey, but I found them well worth it.
